African Mask/ Elephants Ear
The Alocasia Polly is a dramatic tropical plant largely thanks to its bold, vibrant leaves. Known widely as African mask plant or elephant ears, the alocasia has deep green leaves with very prominent veining that looks like it has its own pulse. The leaves are heart-shaped and have ruffled edges, and a rich purple under leaf which adds to its dramatic appearance.
Small Nursery Pot Size: 12cm
Large Nursery Pot Size: 17cm
Light: I like full to moderate shade as direct sunlight can damage my beautiful leaves.
Water: water me often enough to keep my soil consistently moist. If my soil is dry, this may cause my leaves to turn brown.
Humidity: I thrive in humid conditions. I enjoy having water sprayed on my leaves too.
Temperature: 18-25 degrees is perfect for me.
Fertiliser: I like standard home plant food.
Toxicity: I am toxic to both humans and animals so please keep me in a safe place away from children and pets.
Revival: If you see my leaves turning yellow, I’ve had too much water. Allow the topsoil to dry out before watering me again. If my edges are going brown, I’ve had too much sun. Pop me in a semi-shaded part of the house.
A handy tip - Scatter cocoa bean hulls or shredded bark around the base of your Polly. These materials not only provide nutrients for the soil but also help you plant moisture.
